Using Veterans Affairs Benefits for a Walk-In Tub

Every Safe Step Walk-In Tub is proudly designed, manufactured, and assembled in the USA. Therefore, we are eternally grateful for the veterans who have served this country. We are happy to help any veteran who may be looking for assistance learn more about using Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits for a walk-in tub. For many, this is an investment in their future, and, luckily, there are grants available to assist in making your home’s bathroom a safer place.

Fortunately, the VA does offer financial benefits to those looking to purchase a walk-in tub. While tubs with jet features are not covered, the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant, the Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant, and the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant are available to help with funding. Many may wonder about the differences between these grants and the guidelines for each. Keep reading to learn more!

Disability Housing (SAH & SHA) Grants

Both the SAH and SHA grants are categorized by the VA as Disability Housing Grants. These offer assistance to veterans so they can buy, build, or change their permanent home to meet their needs and live more independently.

The SAH grant is offered to 120 qualifying veterans and service members each fiscal year. To qualify, applicants must own or soon own the designated home and have a qualifying service-connected disability. The current maximum amount applicants can receive from this grant in FY 2023 is $109,986. Note that those who qualify for the grant but cannot receive it due to the 120-grant limit may be eligible to receive the grant in the future.

Similarly, to qualify for a SHA grant, the applicant or a family member must own or soon own the designated home, and the applicant must have a qualifying service-connected disability. The current maximum amount applicants can receive from this grant in FY 2023 is $22,036.

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant

The HISA grant provides financial assistance for medically necessary improvements and structural alterations to veterans’ or service members’ homes. Examples include roll-in showers, lowered sinks and counters, and non-jetted walk-in tubs. The maximum amount applicants can receive from this grant is $6,800 for service-connected disabilities and $2,000 for other disabilities. Note that all HISA projects must be medically justified.
