Maintenance Guide for Your Walk-In Tub

Quality walk-in tubs will last you a lifetime. However, that doesn’t mean you can get away with not maintaining them properly. Proper maintenance is essential to ensure that your walk-in tub stays beautiful, safe, and functional. This maintenance guide for your walk-in tub will provide you with tips for properly maintaining this type of tub.

Rinse after Bathing

After you use your walk-in tub, you may want to simply go about your day. However, a few minutes of maintenance every time you bathe can save you a great deal of scrubbing later on. Instead of simply draining your tub and leaving it, take a minute to rinse out the tub with warm water. The handheld shower wand is perfect for this.

This simple rinse helps to remove any build-up, such as limescale and soap scum, while it’s still fresh. Without rinsing, that build-up will settle and dry onto the surfaces and become much harder to remove.

Weekly Cleaning

You should clean your walk-in tub more thoroughly once a week. If you follow the above tip and rinse after each bath, this weekly cleaning shouldn’t be too difficult. Just use a mild, nonabrasive cleaner (i.e. disinfecting wipes, window/glass cleaner, multipurpose bathroom cleaner, etc.) and a soft sponge or washcloth to scrub everything down. The door seal should also be cleaned weekly with rubbing alcohol on all surfaces. Avoid using any wire brushes or steel wool to scrub your tub. While it may get off any build-up on the tub, it will also damage the tub’s surface. You should also ensure that the cleaner you’re using is safe on acrylic.

Be sure to wash all the surfaces, as well as the fixtures, to leave them looking shiny and new again!

Monthly Internal Cleaning

Thus far, you’re probably thinking that cleaning a walk-in tub is essentially the same as cleaning a standard tub. While you’re not wrong, this section is going to be a bit different than the above-mentioned cleaning tips. You see, walk-in tubs often include either air or water jet systems to provide therapeutic massages while bathing. Walk-in tubs with jets require special purging and cleaning once a month.

To thoroughly clean your tub, fill it with warm water until the top of the back jet is covered. Then, pour in one cup of bleach (not the “splashless” type) and a tablespoon of dishwasher powder. Run the air jets or micro-bubbles for 15 minutes and the water jets for 15 minutes. Then, drain and rinse with the handheld shower wand. This process disinfects the tubing inside the jets and removes any dirt and grime so that you can get a truly clean and fresh bathing experience every time.

Repairing Damage

While it’s extremely difficult to damage our durable walk-in tubs, it does occasionally happen. Keep an eye out for any damage to the tub’s surface, fixtures, or moving parts. This includes looking for leaks around the faucets or in the showerhead hose, as well as looking for loose handles, trouble with the door hinges, and more. Be sure to repair this damage right away to ensure your tub is always safe, watertight, and ready for use.
